The Southern Pine Beetle is a forest pest new to our area, with its range expanding as winters grow warmer. Pitch pine (Pinus rigida), a dominant species of the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens, is particularly susceptible to this insect. Join Russell Norton and Orleans Conservation Trust to learn more about the Southern Pine Beetle, including how to identify it and distinguish its damage from that of other bark beetles. We’ll also explore what its presence may mean for our local forests, and the management approaches that can help promote a healthier, more resilient landscape.

Russell Norton is an Extension Educator for the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension’s Agriculture and Horticulture program and the UMass Extension Landscape, Nursery and Urban Forestry Program. Russell provides technical expertise to agriculture and horticulture professionals as well as the general public. His primary focus is Integrated Pest Management (IPM) but covers all aspects of agriculture and horticulture.

This lecture will take place at the CHO Meetinghouse, 3 River Road, Orleans. Doors open at 6:00pm, and the lecture starts at 6:30pm.
