Difference between Town and OCT

Many still confuse our private, non-profit land trust with the wetlands regulatory arm of town government (the Town of Orleans Conservation Commission). OCT is governed by a board of volunteers elected internally by the existing Trustees. Our sole purpose is to acquire and manage natural lands as protected open space to preserve Orleans’ unique heritage.

The Town Commission’s role is to advise town staff on natural resource regulatory matters, manage town-owned conservation land, and issue permits under the Wetlands Protection Act.

While we have collaborated with the Town to preserve important parcels of land, OCT is dependent upon the generosity of the community and private organizations for funding support.
